Dress for Every Occasion

You already know dresses are key for special events and after-five, but this season you'll want to turn to dresses for everything from work to weekend wear.
Leading the dress pack is the shirt dress, an easy look for most offices and universally flattering (the collar and button-front draw attention to your face, the belted waist gives you shape, and the full skirt hides a heavy lower body).
Jersey knit dresses are another great look for spring and summer. The beautiful drape of jersey allows dresses to caress your body without being skintight. With jersey, you'll need to eliminate seams and pantylines because bumps and lumps do show; try a one-piece bodyslimmer or seamless lingerie.

The New Nail Fix

Neutrogena has a nifty new nail product that we're just crazy about: the Neutrogena Instant Nail Enhancer. When we're giving our nails a break from the manicure routine, this is just the thing to make your nails look great. It comes in tube with a brush: you just brush the solution on bare nails every day instead of nail polish. They look like they've been buffed, with a nice sheen. There is no odor, it dries instantly and it strengthens nails with Vitamin E and Provitamin B5. So your nails get stronger and they look like you've had them buffed or have a coat of polish will a subtle shine. When you just can't get to the manicurist, just slap this stuff on and your nails look a lot more polished -- and you look like you're totally organized, even if you're not. It comes in either Pearl Sheen (our favorite) or Buffed Sheen.

Holiday Shipping Deadlines Approaching
When can you last order an item online and get it there in time for Christmas and the first day of Hanukkah? Part of the answer to that question depends on how much you are willing to pay.

There are just a few days left before online retailers will start charging you extra for shipping. For many retailers this coming Monday (Dec. 19th) is the last day you can ship an item at regular shipping prices. By Tuesday (Dec. 20th) retailers start charging an extra fee for shipping if you want to get it there by Christmas. December 21st is the very last day to order an item at many online retailers and still get it there by December 25th. Amazon has a shipping option called Guaranteed Accelerated Delivery that can get items ordered on the 22nd there in time for Christmas providing they are eligible.

Keep in mind that every retailer is different and you will want to check the retailer's shipping information page to find out their specific mailing deadlines and fees. We've provided some quick links to the shipping information pages of some retailers below.

Finding the Hermit Crab a Home
When you head home from that beach vacation, you may have some unexpected stowaways: the hermit crabs that children take home from the beach. But hermit crabs grow up and need bigger homes. Now Petco has just the solution: T-Rex Crab Island Decorative Hermit Homes.
T-Rex Crab Island Hermit Homes are intended for two purposes. First, as hermit crabs grow, they need the opportunity to change their shell to a larger more comfortable home. Hermit Crabs should always have access to these shells in their environment. Second, the hermit crab owner may want to give the crab an opportunity to change into a different shell to enhance or change its looks. This is completely appropriate. Just remember, the crab will change shells when it wants to, not necessarily when the caregiver wants to. The changes will normally take place at night when no one is watching.
This would make a great, educational gift for any child who has access to a beach or who gets a hermit crab from the local pet store.

    The Caudalie Cabernet Scrub
We've been eying a vacation at the Caudalie Spa in Bordeaux, France, where they drink bordeaux wine and immerse the spa guests in red wine-derived concotions. The spa's anti-aging vinotherapy concept evolved from the so-called French Paradox study, which concluded that the French have very low heart disease rates even though they eat real butter and cream, largely because they consume huge amounts of red wine. The grape seeds from the grapes contains polyphenols, which some claim to be up to 10,000 times more effective than vitamin E in stopping the free radicals responsible for 80% of premature wrinkling. And that's the basis of the spa treatments.

If you can't make it to the Caudalie Spa this week, here's the next best thing: the Crushed Cabernet Scrub, which is being sold exclusively by Sephora.com. You use it in the shower; the scrub part buffs away dryness, while the crushed grapeseeds, brown sugar and essential oils are infused into your skin. It couldn't hurt to drink a good glass of Cabernet afterwards, either.

  • Felicity Huffman and the Cursed Black Diamond

Best Actress Nominee Felicity Huffman reportedly was supposed to wear a famous black diamond necklace that had a long and cursed history. But on Sunday evening, she arrived in a black Zak Posen gown, earrings, but no necklace. Was she worried about the curse? Did she decide that the dress looked better without a necklace? Here's the history of the cursed jewel:

Known as the Black Orlov or The Eye of Brahma, the jewel's curse allegedly began when it was removed from a Hindu shrine in southern India and then claimed to be responsible for the violent deaths of two Russian princesses.

Legend tells of a monk removing the original rough 195-carat diamond from the eye of the Idol of Brahma at a shrine near Pondicherry, India. This sacrilege allegedly cursed all future owners of the precious stone to a violent death.

In 1947 Princess Nadia Vyegin-Orlov and Princess Leonila Galitsine-Bariatinsky - both former owners of the Black Orlov - leapt to their deaths in apparent suicides. Fifteen years earlier, J.W. Paris, the diamond dealer who imported the stone to the USA, had jumped to his death from one of New York's tallest buildings shortly after concluding the sale of the jewel.

In an attempt to break the curse, the diamond was re-cut into three separate gems and has since been owned by a succession of private owners, all of whom seem to have escaped the curse. The 67.5-carat Black Orlov is set in a 108-diamond brooch suspended from a 124-diamond necklace.
